Green's restaurant, St James'sWe’re always on the lookout for a great fish restaurant and this one has had very good reviews in the past. The clientel is old (both age-wise and in terms of how long they have been coming to the restaurant) and wealthy, the wine list is decent and the food a little disappointing. We had oysters to start (it was St Patrick’s Day after all) and they were fresh and nicely presented. The mains were very average – a pasta dish with crayfish and squid ink linguine left much to be desired, but the fish and chips with very minty peas was better. Service was attentive and the environment a little unusual with leather banquette boots. Still, I suspect you’d need to be part of the social circle in attendance to truly enjoy the place. There are definitely better fish restaurants. www.greens.org.uk

sheekeysleicestersquare1We love Sheekey’s. The fish is extremely tasty (try the mixed grill) and although the atmosphere can be a little on the posh side, that can easily be overcome by dining at the bar. Excellent service, fresh produce and lovely sides. www.j-sheekey.co.uk

Sake No Hana, St James’s

sake-no-hanaSake No Hana was so busy at the time of booking that we could only secure a table in the bar area. This turned out to be a bit of a treat – the atmosphere was calm and soothing and service was exceptional. The food is experimental and tasty, but severely expensive, so it’s advisable to make use of good offers on e.g. TopTable… If you love modern Japanese food and you’re looking for a restaurant with a versatile and impressive menu, Sake No Hana is the place to go. Drinks are imaginative and very boozy, service is outstanding and our second visit to the upstairs dining area was absolutely wonderful. www.sakenohana.com

Back to Basics, Fitzrovia

Back to BasicsFunny fish restaurant in our favourite part of town – Fitzrovia. Good quality food, outdoor dining when the weather permits, and situated right on the lovely Foley street alongside other pubs and restaurants. Although service can be a little on the unique side, we like this place – it feels like home. Cooking is quite basic, but the fish is always fresh and tasty.
