The Gilbert Scott, St Pancras

Quality English food in the beautifully restored St Pancras station hotel. Good wine list, friendly service and a simple menu combining the delightful with the traditional. We are not yet sure how the GS will position itself among London restaurants, we think it sits nicely among the likes of Corrigans and the Wolseley.

manna restaurantManna serves up delicious, varied vegetarian cuisine that convinces even the most entrenched meat eater that veggie can be wonderful. We keep coming back to Manna for the informal, relaxed atmosphere and the reliable, tasty dishes on the menu. We were slighly disappointed with the Chef Salad this time – it seems to have suffered a blow under the weight of the credit crunch. Everything else was lovely – the won tons, summer rolls and the beautiful curry. www.mannav.com

pattersonsGreat, straightforward menu with quality ingredients and interesting options. Decent for vegetarians and fish eaters too! Patterson’s prides itself on its family tradition and if you feel like British fine dining in beautiful Mayfair, then it is definitely worth a try. The wine list offers a range of prices, grapes and countries. We had excellent sea bass and pork belly for our mains and very good cheeses and sweet dessert wine afterwards. As we made use of a Top Table offer, the food was half price, which made the whole event much more affordable. Normal prices are £15 for starters, £20 for mains and £10 for puddings. www.pattersonsrestaurant.com

Green’s, St James’s

Green's restaurant, St James'sWe’re always on the lookout for a great fish restaurant and this one has had very good reviews in the past. The clientel is old (both age-wise and in terms of how long they have been coming to the restaurant) and wealthy, the wine list is decent and the food a little disappointing. We had oysters to start (it was St Patrick’s Day after all) and they were fresh and nicely presented. The mains were very average – a pasta dish with crayfish and squid ink linguine left much to be desired, but the fish and chips with very minty peas was better. Service was attentive and the environment a little unusual with leather banquette boots. Still, I suspect you’d need to be part of the social circle in attendance to truly enjoy the place. There are definitely better fish restaurants. www.greens.org.uk

Brumus HaymarketWe had afternoon tea here, taking advantage of a champagne tea offer that was both good value and absolutely delicious! The atmosphere is relaxed and luxurious, service is keen and attentive and the selection of cakes, scones and sandwiches left nothing to be desired. Watch out for expensive second glasses of champagne though, ouch!www.firmdalehotels.com
